Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, and Councillor Mike Williamson (SNP) are to host a second meeting to discuss the environmental impact of wild camping in Highland Perthshire.

The meeting, due to take place tomorrow (22nd February), will bring together a wide range of stakeholders including SSE, The Forestry Commission, Police Scotland and local riparian owners.

This will be the second meeting held by the SNP politicians, following on from an open meeting held late last year in Pitlochry, which allowed locals to share their experience of the impact of wild camping – from grey waste dumping, to littering to antisocial behaviour. Following this meeting, Mr Swinney and Mr Williamson engaged with stakeholders to discuss potential solutions and ways to minimise the environmental damage of wild camping.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“I am pleased that another meeting has been convened to discuss how best to approach the issue of wild camping.

“Whilst the increased levels of tourism to Highland Perthshire are hugely welcome, it is important that what brings many people to the area – its unspoiled beauty – is not damaged.

“This meeting will allow us to sample to views of several key groups, and to discuss what measures would be appropriate to address the legitimate concerns of the residents of Highland Perthshire.”

Mike Williamson added:

“As elected representatives, we have a responsibility to safeguard the environment and reputation of Highland Perthshire.  Accordingly, I am very happy that further attention is being drawn to the unwanted consequences of wild camping.

“In order to make any progress on this matter, it is important that all parties work together in order to balance the need to protecting the environment with the need to continue attracting people to this stunning part of Perthshire.”
